Ramblings of a cranky old man
Published on September 25, 2001 By JayG In WinCustomize Talk
as a long time litestep user (jagula from #litestep on efnet) i've noticed that more and more litestep activity is happening here. ls2k is still the hub for news but seems like more and more people are coming here for their themes? anyone else noticing this?

JayG....we just have a few devotees of 'STEPping over here.....and without too many interruptions from annoying kiddies...[hehe].
With the likes of Alexandrie and Phar0e ....[and that idiot who does all that grey stuff]...there is a reasonable selection of themes....mostly more recent releases than the older archives at litestep.com, or Custo.
100 themes [at the moment] is pretty good.
I remember when there were only ever 100 themes anywhere.
Did I mention I was getting old?....

... and more and more grey?

Hmm, i'm not sure JayG. I don't follow the Litestep stuff as much as I used to.

There are a couple of questions you would have to find the answers to:

1) Where do most people download their Litestep themes from?

2) How often are the sites that carry Litestep themes getting new submissions?

To answer that you would need to:

a) Find the major sites that carry Litestep and see what the downloads per day are.

Same as A but see how many total downloads they're getting over a period of time.

c) Find out how many total they have. We only have 101 Litestep themes here, surely there are thousands out there.

d) Find out how many new submissions the major sites have gotten of Litestep themes in say the month of September.

If someone wants to look into that, then they could find out where the hub is. LS2K would probably be interested in that info too.

*warning* wordy ramblings to follow

I would say that Wincusto has probably seen the greatest amount of newly released themes over the last couple of months, with the one exception being customize.org. Customize was recieving a fair amount of previously released themes, people were catching up per say.

I don't think the "Litestep Community" (if there is such a thing...hmm...there is, I guess) will adopt a general skins site as there "main" place to gather themes from. A comment I hear often is this place or place isn't Litestep specific, so they'll wait till one pops up.

There are a couple of Litesteppers who are hosting themes on their own pages. DJCricket has themes (not just his own) on his site. Jemmaledin has several themes on his site designed to work with the new LSDistro (including a version of my Ivory for Litestep theme).

The "community" is still pretty young generally (in age and maturity)(although Jafo and I skew that average fairly severely) and they seem to want there own place to identify with. As an example, Jalist from LS2K tried to launch a LS screenshot + themes site a couple of weeks ago. I tried to create an account there the very day the site launched and there was already nearly 200 users already registered at the site. He had to take the site down within the day. Traffic was through the roof and he didn't have hosting that allowed for what he needed.

As for for me (and others obviously) Wincustomize had become home. It's a mature group that hangs here, the site is here for the long haul, and the admins are quite dedicated to Wincusto. We couldn't ask for more adn I'll continue to refer other Listeppers here as often as I can

*End* of endless ramblings...for now.

I guess Phil has said it well....Litestep.com and Litestep.net were the places to be originally....with Custo taking a distant third, due to its then plethora of juveniles...and later on skinz became all-important due to its omnipresence...for all-things-skinning.
Deviantart is too pre-occupied with 'fine-art', with skinning and themeing taking a back-seat.
LOS is small and has much less traffic....[simply based on relative DLs for my 'STEP themes compared with here].
That leaves WinCustomize....which is a wonderful site...[but I'm biased]...
One strange example is the LOS theme that I did for the LOS site....It has more downloads at any site other than LOS....
